From trends to timeless: designing for longevity

Nothing is more dated than the design language of eighteen months ago. Nothing is more forgettable than work that refused to belong to any moment at all.

Trends are a vocabulary, not a strategy

  • A trend tells you what your audience currently finds legible.
  • It does not tell you what you should be saying.
  • Borrow the legibility; supply the meaning yourself.

Put the trend in the layer you can change

Structure ages slowly and surface ages fast. Keep the grid, the type ramp and the information hierarchy conservative, and let the trend live in the accent colour, the photography treatment and the motion -- the three things you can replace in a week without renegotiating anything.

The five-year question

Before adopting anything, ask what it costs to remove. If removing it means rebuilding the layout, it is in the wrong layer. If it means swapping a variable, it is in the right one.

Conclusion

Timeless is not a style; it is a structural property. The work that still reads well in ten years is rarely the work that avoided its own decade -- it is the work whose bones were sound enough to carry whatever was fashionable at the time.
